This is a must see for anyone who likes small towns and history. The Historic District is a lovely place to stroll through, with museums and Cumberland Island nearby. The people are among the friendliest anywhere, and the city is conveniently laid out. I've lived in several places in the United States, to include St. Marys; and I have to say that it was by far the best out of any of them.

Cumberland Island is like no place I've ever visited anywhere in the world. The sight of wild horses roaming among the dunes on a beach with no condos, hotels or hoards of sunbathers is amazing, as is the interior of the island with its unbelievably green tangle of twisted live oaks and palmetto. Add to that the ruins of Dungeness, the old millionaire's estate and the other historical structures on the island, and you have a bit of paradise rarely seen, especially in this overdeveloped country of ours (the US). Thankfully, the experience is only enhanced by the limited number of visitors allowed on the island at any one time. On my last visit, I took two of my sisters, my nieces and a friend for a short day trip, and we saw armadillos at our feet, a family of feral pigs (with a pearl-string of tiny piglets in tow), a deer that didn't seem to care we were only a few yards away, and a wild mare nuzzling her colt in the sea oats. A magical place.

The most remarkable place and what a wonderful peace we experienced while on Cumberland. It really does need to be protected and left intact the way it is naturally. Thank God for such a place. Being there on Easter was an awesome experience and the weather was beautiful.

Travel Review

Nowhere else on the East Coast are peace and unspoiled natural surroundings so perfectly preserved as at Cumberland Island. Since 1972, most of this island has been a National Seashore administered by the National Park Service. To visit Cumberland Island, just 16 miles long and 3 miles across at its widest point, is to step into a wilderness of maritime forest (with tunnel-like roads canopied by live oaks, cabbage palms, magnolia, holly, red cedar, and pine), salt marshes alive with waving grasses, sand dunes arranged by wind and tide into a double line of defense against erosion, and gleaming sand beaches that measure a few hundred yards in width at low tide. It is to enter a world teeming with animal life, where alligators wallow in marshes, white-tailed deer bound through the trees, wild pigs snuffle in the undergrowth, armadillos and wild turkeys roam freely about, more than 300 species of birds wheel overhead, and wild horses canter in herds or pick their way peacefully to watering holes.
